Geologists should not be put off in considering this second edition of the Geotechnical Engineering Investigation Handbook, for it could just as well be titled "Engineering: Geological Field Techniques Handbook." When the first edition of this large book came out 21 years ago, I was thoroughly impressed with it and wrote a review that reflected that assessment. Now I have the opportunity to visit the second edition, which was written by a man who now is 20 years wiser. In fact, I am writing this review 3200 km away from my library, and I am not even tempted to see what I had to say the first time. The point is that Roy Hunt did the impossible with the first edition and now he has "squared" that effort.
